To have an insight into the foundation of Abrioné and VB Cosmetics, you may want to know about the personal story and philosophy of Dr. Vivian Valenty, the founder and CEO of the company.

From an early age growing up in the Philippines, Dr. Valenty learned that the plants in her family’s garden not only provided food but also served as healing therapies. For example, tamarind fruit was eaten raw or cooked into soups while its leaves were used to soothe the discomfort of measles. Freshly cut garlic cloves rubbed immediately on a bee sting brought instant relief. Bitter melon was not only a nutritious delicacy; a poultice made from its young leaves was used to speed healing and prevent infection from minor cuts and wounds. Herbal flowers were macerated and applied to boils while indigo mixed with vinegar and cornstarch was a therapy for mumps.

It is therefore not surprising that Dr.Valenty has a strong affinity for utilizing the healing power of natural extracts in creating Abrioné products. The first skincare product she created was made from a mixture of fruit extracts and aloe vera gel. The incentive to develop this product came because she had acne and commercially available products did not work on her. This formulation cleared her acne after one month of application twice a day. This fantastic product is now part of the Abrioné line and is called Vanishing Point.

Dr. Valenty’s acumen for creating effective products did not come just from instincts. It involves years of education and training. She obtained her B.S. Chemistry degree from the Mapúa Institute of Technology, a prestigious technical, engineering and architectural college in Manila at the age of 19. Her achievements in her first job as a research chemist at the International Rice Research Institute provided her a travel grant to pursue graduate studies at the Pennsylvania State University where she earned her Ph.D. in chemistry. She took time off to be a full time housewife and raise her son and daughter before embarking on a post doctoral career. Dr. Valenty taught organic chemistry and biochemistry at Skidmore College, worked in blood coagulation research at the New York State Department of Health; generated patents on products from corn for Staley Manufacturing Company, and developed new silicone-based materials for General Electric.

An internal relocation within GE gave Dr. Valenty the opportunity to start an entrepreneurial company (Analyze, Inc.) with her husband who is also a Ph.D. chemist but whose expertise is in problem solving. A few years later, Dr. Valenty retired from the corporate world to join her husband in their business full time offering her expertise in new product development. She invented and patented the first uv curing topcoat for fingernail polish in 1990. Her venture into skincare launched VB Cosmetics in 1993.
